ABOUT US
While Rockford,
Illinois has more than 280 Christian Churches of various
denomination, many people do not realize that our community
also includes active worshiping communities of Jews,
Muslims, Buddhists, Baha'is, Hindus, Unitarian Universalists,
and people of other religious persuasions.
It would be pleasant
to believe that people of varying faiths could automatically
live together in harmony, but history tells us a very
different story: suspicion, fear, and hate have too
often characterized interfaith relationships.
In 1990, then Rockford
Mayor, Charles Box, called together a committee of leaders
of diverse religious communities and charged them organizing
an interfaith Thanksgiving observance for our community.
From this beginning, the Rockford Interfaith Council
emerged and has grown.
For many years, the
Council functioned largely as an organization of faith
groups. It has now decided to also reach out to individuals
who share its concerns.
